Thick Film Chip Resistors

Surface Mount Devices (SMD) i.e. Thick Film Resistors gained popularity in the 1970s and today, they are by far the most commonly used resistors in electrical and electronic devices and have the lowest cost vis-à-vis any other resistor. They are manufactured by screening a uniform resistive metal glaze layer on a high grade ceramic body. The different compositions of metal glaze help procure a series of different values. This layer is given a protective coating and the end contacts are made to ensure optimum solderability. SMDs are available in a tolerance rating of ±1% and ±5%.
